Music is open ended, it’s never really done and dusted. We continue remixing, reworking like the many painted layers of an oil canvas. Mixing and matching bits of incomplete demos until we arrive at a pleasing junction. Then release…and go again.
Painters start with sketchbooks, my version is a portable hard-drive that, to date, stores around 10 years of recordings. Every new recording I begin is a new sketch. Sometimes the sketch evolves quickly into a finished track. But often it gets stored away.
Freaks & Oddities is a scattering of ideas. I know what I’m trying to achieve musically, there’s a particular sound and vibe I’m looking for, but it’s harder to explain in words. I know a little music theory, but generally I improvise, play by ear. My training ground was jamming with other musicians until we found the right song.
